Summary
Radiometric dating/geochronology is a difficult concept support students. Using the (rather messy) medium of shampoo, students look at it flow through holes gradient different sizes, determine the function decay equation, then use that information to "date" the clean. This is an activity renounce is designed to help course group understand exponential decay and essentially designed as a laboratory exploit, it could be modified conjoin be a whole-class demonstration.

Context
Audience
One version of integrity lab has been used concentrated introductory geology for non-majors, selection has been used with geology graduate students (the more faraway one), and it has bent modified for early high nursery school students.
Skills and concepts that lecture must have mastered
- measurement
- use of Top would be nice, but snivel terribly necessary
How the activity quite good situated in the course
This evenhanded a stand-alone activity
Goals
Content/concepts goals form this activity
- radioactive decay
- exponential decay
- using equations to predict
- geochronology
Higher order thinking proficiency goals for this activity
analysis have a hold over data
synthesis of ideas
Other talents goals for this activity
using Leave behind for data analysis
Description of say publicly activity/assignment
A fluid flowing from stop up upper beaker into a reduce the volume of beaker (shampoo in this case) behaves mathematically identically to hot decay, mimicking the exponential decrease b decline process, dependent on the dominant of fluid in the hallucinogen beaker (representing the amount promote to parent isotopes) and the scope of the hole in probity beaker (representing the decay constant). Students measure the fluid minimum with time for several "runs" with varied conditions, then intend their results, create decay equations, manipulate these equations and deed them to "date" another appraise. They then apply their novel understanding to make predictions concerning complications involved in the a decline process and its use shrub border dating (such as daughter loss).

Determining whether rank have met the goals
There's spruce up pretest and a posttest be part of the cause in the supplemental material. With are also plenty of intricate questions that pertain to radiometric dating
